There are places where art needs no introduction. It enters conversations, blends into everyday life, accompanies an encounter, a dinner, a glass of wine. Places where artworks are not separated from the world but become part of it, establishing unexpected, spontaneous and sometimes lasting relationships with those who encounter them.
It is from this idea of closeness between art and life that In Good Company takes shape, an exhibition conceived by Mara Sartore to mark the twentieth anniversary of Lightbox, which she founded with Matteo Bartoli in Venice in 2006.
“The project brings together works by artists from different generations, geographies and artistic practices, with whom we have shared experiences, projects, conversations and journeys over the years. A constellation of individuals brought together not by thematic or formal criteria, but through the complex and unpredictable fabric of human relationships.
Working with artists often means entering territories that extend beyond the professional sphere. It means exchanging perspectives on the world, sharing intuitions and uncertainties, navigating affinities and differences, and building connections that, over time, sometimes develop into deep friendships. Every collaboration leaves a trace that extends beyond the project itself, helping to shape a personal geography of encounters, places and memories.”
In Good Company is neither a retrospective nor a reconstruction of Lightbox’s twenty-year history. Rather, it is an emotional geography, necessarily partial and continually evolving, in which the artworks make visible a network of shared experiences.
An exhibition born from a personal history, yet belonging to everyone who has helped shape it. Because what remains of a journey through art is not defined solely by the projects realised, but also lives on in the relationships those projects have made possible, the transformations they have brought about and the stories that continue to intertwine.
